Becoming a dietitian usually requires the completion of either a bachelor's or master's degree in dietetics or nutrition. Dietitians are nutrition professionals who specialize in advising clients with special dietary needs by helping them put together specific dietary plans that meet their health and wellness needs. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the top-paid dietitians nationwide made more than$74,690 per year as of May 2009.
Iowa State University
Iowa State University offers both bachelor's and master's degrees in dietetics. The school offers a didactic program in dietetics, which means that the program is designed in such a way that it has a built-in internship program that meets the requirements of the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the American Dietetic Association. The school also offers a joint diet and exercise bachelor's and master's degree. In addition to these programs, Iowa State offers a Master of Family and Consumer Sciences degree in dietetics that can be obtained through online study.
Texas Tech University
Texas Tech University also offers aspiring dietitians the opportunity to pursue an internship through its program. The internship is an 11-month program that provides students with the opportunity to gain 1,248 hours of supervised experience in preparation for the registered dietitian certification. At the master's degree level, students can pursue a Master of Science in Nutrition Science. The degree is offered with both a thesis and non-thesis option. All students take a Introduction to Nutritional Sciences Research course and have considerable leeway in choosing the remainder of their coursework.
Eastern Michigan University
Eastern Michigan University offers students the opportunity to pursue a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Dietetics. Both degree program are offered both online and through on-campus study. Both programs also are offered with the option to pursue an internship for the purpose of meeting the necessary requirements to gain the registered dietitian credential. The Master of Science degree is offered without the internship as well. This option is for dietitians and nutritionists who wish to enhance their current credentials.
University of Wisconsin-Stout
The University of Wisconsin-Stout offers an opportunity for students to study dietetics at the undergraduate level. The school's Bachelor of Science in Dietetics degree requires a 320-hour internship program in preparation for a dietetics career. The degree program requires the completion of 124 to 125 credit hours, depending upon which electives the student decides to pursue. Of these, 79 credit hours are divided up among different areas of study within the dietetics program: physical and biological science; medical nutrition therapy and nutrition; food and food science; nutrition education and counseling; food service administratio; and several other major areas of study.
