The GI Montgomery Bill is a federally funded program to assist veterans and their dependents achieve their educational goals. This bill is the most common source of education funding for dependent children of Army veterans. The GI Montgomery Bill houses several grant programs to assist with your continuing education costs.
The Scholarships for Military Children Program
The Scholarships for Military Children Program is sponsored by the Defense Commissary Agency and awards $1,500 scholarships every year at each commissary location. To be eligible, you must be the child of an active-duty, guard, reserve, retired or deceased military personnel. Applicants must be a full-time student at a university or college and maintain at least a 3.0 GPA. The scholarship can be used toward tuition, books and other related expenses.
Army Emergency Relief
Army Emergency Relief is a private nonprofit organization that provides financial assistance to soldiers and their dependents. This organization offers the MG James Ursano Scholarship, which was established in 1976 to help Army families with undergraduate college expenses for their dependent children. To be eligible, you must be a dependent of a soldier on federal active duty, a retiree or a deceased active or retired soldier. You must also attend an undergraduate program full-time and maintain a 2.0 GPA to be considered. The scholarship funds are divided evenly between the fall and spring semesters and can be used for tuition, fees, room and board, books and supplies. There is no set dollar amount for how much scholarship money is awarded. Determination of funds is based on financial need.
ThanksUSA Scholarship Program
ThanksUSA is a private nonprofit organization that offers 1,000 college scholarships a year to children of active-duty military personnel, reservists, retired and deceased soldiers. Applicants must attend a two- or four-year college and maintain at least a 2.5 GPA to be considered. Scholarship amounts range from $1,000 to $5,000 based on financial need, leadership and community service and academic performance.
