Alphabet Preschool Science Activities

Preschool science activities can reinforce the alphabet.

Preschool years provide children with a strong foundation for reading readiness through reviewing and teaching the alphabet. Fortunately, there are many activities that can teach the alphabet and engage children beyond literacy and writing. Alphabet science activities reinforce letters and provide young minds with the opportunity to engage in hands-on activities and explore the world around them.

Soil Play

This activity is inexpensive, but a little messy, and teaches children how water changes the consistency of soil. Conduct the activity on a table covered with a large plastic cloth or trash bag for easy clean-up. Give children a bin of dry soil. Tell them to take their fingers and draw letters of the alphabet in it. If the oil s soft, they will probably be able to see the letters, but if it is hard and brittle they may not. Discuss whether the children can see the letters and how the soil feels. Next, add water to bins of soil and mix it until it becomes soft mud. Have plenty of towels handy and let the children draw letters with one finger in the mud. Discuss whether they can see the letters they drew and how the wet soil felt compared to the dry soil. The class can make a chart describing the differences in the soil.

Alphabet Weather Book

Children can learn about weather by listening to a story about different types of weather. Then they can color their own alphabet pages of different types of weather. Coloring pages can depict days with different weather conditions. For example, describe the weather condition and see if the children can identify the beginning letter of the weather in the picture. Then write the type of weather at the top of the page and ask the children to underline the first letter. The children can talk about how the weather feels on each type of day before they color their pages.

Sink Float Experiment

Provide the children with a sheet titled "S is for Sink" and a sheet titled "F is for Float." Give the children a bin of water and about eight objects. Tell them to put the objects in the water and see if they float or sink. After they try each object, they must put it on the correct sheet of paper. Sample objects can include soap, sponges, foam, a plastic bottle, a pencil, a piece of tape, a marshmallow or a plastic pen.
