Prepare A Portfolio For Fashion Design School

Having a fashion portfolio helps to market your skills and talents.

A portfolio showcases your skills and talents to potential employers and school admissions officers. It is a visual display of the best creative work you've performed in the past, such as artwork, graphic design or fashion samples. A portfolio can serve to jumpstart your career, showing that you're both talented and marketable. Follow certain guidelines to prepare a portfolio as part of your application to fashion design school.

Instructions

1. Decide how you want to present and organize your work. You can purchase a binder with plastic page inserts from your local office or craft supply shop. Depending on your industry, you may want to spend a little more cash on a more durable presentation folder.

2. Gather some of your past work samples, choosing the ones you are most fond of, and organize them into the order you'd like them to appear in your portfolio. Make sure you keep items from the same collection or group together.

3. Incorporate some sketch work into the portfolio to portray your original intention for the design as compared to the finished product. The sketches should be the final draft, in color and full size.

4. Place fabric swatches in the portfolio to illustrate the color, fabric, texture and pattern of each design.

5. Include a color photo of the finished product in the portfolio. Make sure that you have someone to model the clothes when taking the photos.

6. Place the pages into the portfolio in an order that makes sense. Think about the overarching theme you want to portray about your work, as well as any emotions that may be apparent. One page should flow effortlessly to the next, as if they tell a story.

7. Make a digital copy of the original portfolio. This comes in handy if you apply to fashion schools or jobs that are far away, as it is easier to mail your portfolio on a disc. Scan all the images and transfer them to a disc. Before sending, review the disc to make sure all images scanned correctly.
