College tuition is expensive.
With tuition fees on the rise, students often struggle to pay for their college educations. Federal student loans and grants are available to students who complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA); once a student files the FAFSA, the results are sent to the student's college, and the college determines how much financial aid the student receives from grants and federal loans. The application uses a student's age, financial situation and family situation to determine how much the student is expected to contribute toward his education and how much he is eligible to receive in financial aid.
Instructions
1. Obtain a copy of the FAFSA form from any college financial aid office or by visiting the FAFSA website and filing the form electronically. Each year students are required to file a FAFSA to determine financial aid status.
2. Complete the FAFSA. On the form, provide the student's name, address, Social Security number, date of birth, tax return information, dependent information, marital status and parental income information if the student is a dependent.
3. Mail the FAFSA to the address listed on the application or submit it online. The federal government sends correspondence via postal mail or email -- depending on the student's filing choice -- regarding the student's financial aid status.
