Attending a culinary school is expensive, however, many students see it as an investment in their careers. Unlike loans, scholarships and grants for culinary school do not need to be repaid. Funding for culinary students is often available through private foundations, culinary schools and associations. StarChefs.com provides several culinary-school scholarships. The merit-based scholarships focus on culinary professionals who show exceptional ability, motivation and potential. Merit scholarships provide funding for students to attend the New England Culinary Institute in Vermont. StarChefs also offers full tuition scholarships and advanced placement scholarships.
Women Chefs and Restrauteurs
Women Chefs and Restaurateurs is a scholarship and internship program focusing on the advancement of women in the culinary field. The amount varies per year, but averages approximately $20,000 per scholarship or $5,000 per year of education.
Culinary trust
The Culinary Trust is an annual scholarship program that provides scholarships and grants for those entering culinary school or attending continuing education courses, completing independent studies, and researching or writing. Scholarships are offered for U.S. citizens and international students.
James Beard Foundation
The James Beard Foundation provides grants for culinary students, including tuition waivers and school scholarships. Scholarships are awarded based on GPA, extra-curricular activities, work experience, financial need and recommendation letters. The foundation provides approximately 125 scholarships per year.
Charlie Trotter
The Charlie Trotter Culinary Education Foundation awards scholarships to students seeking an education and career in the culinary arts. Scholarships can be awarded for tuition, as well as housing expenses.
State Restaurant Associations
State restaurant associations often provide scholarship opportunities for students and professionals. Some of the scholarship programs provide apprenticeships or scholarships for study at schools such as the International Culinary School at the Art Institute of Colorado. Normally, state associations limit grants to state residents.
Hospitality Associations
Hospitality associations, such as the Arkansas Hospitality Association, provide scholarships to students who are pursuing a hospitality-related degree. Scholarships are made available through your state hospitality association.
NREAF
The National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NREAF) offers several scholarships for food service degrees, including scholarships for high school seniors, merit scholarships, undergraduate student scholarships, travel and other areas. The normal grant amount is $2,500.
Chefs4Students.org
Chefs4Students is a scholarship program which requires that students be enrolled in an accredited culinary school. Students are required to remain in good standing and be enrolled for six weeks before they will be provided with any grant disbursements.
