Regionally Accredited Online Mba Programs

An online MBA could prove worthless if your university isn't accredited by a regional accrediting agency.

It's a small detail that's easy to overlook. But it's a detail that could make your new MBA valuable or utterly worthless to employers. That detail is your online school's regional accreditation, a designation colleges and universities earn in order to be recognized as viable places of higher learning. With a plethora of online colleges and universities from which to choose, it's quite simple for anyone to make up an accreditation title, tack it on to the school's name and crank out diplomas. Before you invest the necessary time, money and effort into obtaining your MBA online, you should confirm that your degree will have true legitimacy and merit.

Green Mountain College

Accredited by the New England Association of Colleges and Schools, Green Mountain College in Poultney, Vermont, centers its online MBA program on one specific topic: sustainability. Online MBA students must attend two residency sessions at the campus during the first and last semester, where they will meet fellow students and faculty. They then begin a series of six-week online courses in management, communications, information technology, marketing, finance, accounting and economics. Each course examines the topic of sustainability--from awareness of and responsiveness to the interests of the environment, to the needs of employees and other stakeholders of an organization. For students who'd prefer to focus on earning a general MBA, Green Mountain offers courses in leadership, business ethics, decision-making and strategic management. The online MBA can be completed in two years and requires 37 hours of course work. Interested candidates must have a GPA of at least 3.0 and provide a GMAT score earned within the past five years or, in place of the GMAT, provide a quantitative skills assessment that includes a list of college-level math, statistics, economics, finance and accounting courses. They must also write a personal essay.
