Make Friends As A Freshman

The friends you make during your freshman year of college are likely to remain your friends for life. College allows you to choose new friends from a diverse group of people from various locations and backgrounds. Making friends during your freshman year doesn't have to be difficult. In fact, creating new friends during your freshman year can be one of the most exciting aspects of your college career.

Instructions

1. Join clubs or organizations that reflect your interests and style. Finding friends who share your goals and interests is the best way to begin a friendship as you'll have plenty to talk about and can attend related functions together.

2. Connect with your roommate. Your college roommate should be the first person with which you attempt to connect. Be open to discussion and willing to compromise when it comes to your new space.

3. Say hello and smile as you walk across campus. It seems like a given, but it's easy to let nervousness and fragile self-esteem get in the way of our ability to make the first move.

4. Make yourself accessible. Make eye contact as you walk through the halls. If you see someone looking for a seat in a crowded classroom or cafeteria, motion for them to take one next to you.

5. Attend social activities, such as sporting events, plays and other gatherings where you know you're likely to meet new people.

6. Give new friends and acquaintances a way to keep in contact with you. Provide them with a phone number and email address so they can easily get in touch with you.

7. Use social networks online. Join online clubs dedicated to your school or interests where you're likely to connect with people near you.

8. Resist saying no to group outings. If someone calls you for a joint outing to a movie or sporting event, it may be tempting to just stay in and relax with a good book. Instead, take a chance and say yes. Even if the night is a dud, you know you're putting yourself out there.
