Nursing students can take advantage of numerous scholarship opportunities.
A career in nursing can be an emotionally and financially rewarding undertaking. For many students, however, the costs associated with earning a nursing degree can present a major roadblock to success. Scholarships are one way to offset some of the expense. If you're a resident of Texas, you may consider applying for one of the many nursing scholarships available. These awards can make completing your education more affordable by decreasing your out-of-pocket expenses.
Texas Nursing Students Association Scholarship
The Texas Nursing Students Association (TNSA) sponsors an annual scholarship program for Texas residents who are working towards a diploma, ADN or BSN degree. Students must be able to demonstrate involvement in the TNSA at the local, state or national level, as well as a commitment to a career in nursing. As of 2011, the TNSA will award up to two students a scholarship in the amount of $500.
Texas Nursing Association District 5 Scholarship
Students enrolled in the nursing program at the University of Texas at Austin may apply for the Texas Nursing Association District 5 Scholarship. The program is open to all currently enrolled students who are pursuing an ADN, BSN or graduate degree. As of 2011, these students are eligible to receive $1,000, $2,000 or $3,000 respectively. Awards are granted on the basis of academic achievement and financial need. All applicants must be a resident of the TNA District 5 area, which includes Austin and surrounding cities.
Good Samaritan Nursing Scholarships
The Good Samaritan Foundation offers scholarships to Texas residents who are in the clinical phase of their nursing education. Awards are available to students at every level of nursing, including LVN, diploma, ADN, BSN, MSN and DNP. The scholarship may be used to pay for tuition, books and fees. The number and amount of awards granted annually varies based on foundation funding and individual need. Only students who plan to work in the Texas health care system after graduation will be considered.
College for All Texans Nursing Scholarships
The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board sponsors two nursing scholarships for state residents. As of 2011, the Professional Nursing Scholarship provides up to $2,500 in education funding to students who are seeking licensure as a professional nurse. To qualify, you must be enrolled on at least a half-time basis and have a demonstrated financial need. The program is open to students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
The Vocational Nursing Scholarship is available to students who plan to pursue a career as a vocational nurse. As of 2011, the program provides up to $1,500 to selected students. Awards are also based on financial need and certain number of awards are reserved for students from rural communities. Recipients of both awards must be registered for Selective Service or be legally exempt from this requirement.
