Find Your Major

Your choice of major will determine your life's work.

Finding the right major for your college education can be a daunting task, because you might not feel like you know what you want to do with your life straight out of high school just yet. Start by doing some self-analysis, research and taking action to figure out what is the best path for your education and future career.

Instructions

1. Turn off all the other voices. Let go of all your buts, what-ifs and expectations you feel upon you from parents, friends and society. Start analyzing your wants and needs for a college major, depending on your interests, skills, talents and vision for yourself. Write it out in a journal or make a picture collage to help you envision the life you want.

2. Consider the type of lifestyle you want to live. Different people have different needs. Some like a routine and structure, others demand more variety day to day. You may want to be able to travel often, you may want to work among lots of people, or you may wish to work alone from home. Imagine what you would like to do and how you see yourself interacting with the working world.

3. Consider what fulfills you. Look back to the times in your life you have felt most proud of yourself. Write down all of the moments in which you have felt good about yourself, smiled or were excited -- whether anyone praised you or not.

4. Begin your research by looking into careers that facilitate your lifestyle wants, but also fulfill your inner self. You may be shocked at some of the things people get paid for. Find the positions that appeal to you, then research what degree best facilitates that career. Look at what other options that degree gives you; it helps to know what else you could be looking at after college.

5. Volunteer or participate with the positions you are thinking of, if possible; studying something is quite a bit different from doing it. Give your potential passions "test runs" through internships or part-time related work during your schooling if you can. This not only helps you find what you may be looking for, but it can look excellent on a resume when it comes time to job hunt.

6. Remember that nothing is set in stone. Even if you get a degree and decide to change careers later, simply having a degree can be an important advantage in the job market.
