Various courses are needed to fulfill a Bachelor's degree in Healthcare Administration.
A bachelor's of science degree in healthcare administration can provide undergraduate students with the management training and healthcare knowledge necessary to help run and operate a hospital or healthcare facility. This degree can also prepare students to advance in graduate studies or careers in public health policy, business administration or healthcare research. While enrolled in the degree program, students will learn the various techniques to use during the daily operations of healthcare centers, including staffing and training, effective management, and human resources. Many programs in healthcare and hospital administration encourage students to complete an internship or work study experience in the field before graduation.
Before students can engage in the major courses required for the degree, they will have to go through a series of prerequisite classes to see whether they can move forward into the program. With all courses, a minimum grade of "C" is required for advancement.
Liberal Arts
Liberal arts classes are mandatory to any bachelor's degree program. Half of the credit hours for a bachelor's is devoted to general education courses. Many of these are in the area of liberal arts: English, sociology, communication, history, government, psychology, political science, economics, and philosophy.
Mathematics & Science
Math and sciences are an important part of the healthcare field, largely due to the financial interactions and basic healthcare procedures done on a daily basis. Most programs expect students to successfully complete courses in one or more the following areas: Algebra, Contemporary Mathematics, Pre-calculus, Calculus, Statistics, Accounting, Biology, Survey of Bioscience, Environmental Science, Human Biology, and Anatomy and Physiology.
Computer Proficiency
Computer proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, presentation and database software is expected. Several computer courses will be needed for this program to prepare students for the use of computers within this field. A combination of courses can be taken, including Computer and Internet Literacy, Computer Fundamentals, Intro to Microcomputer Applications, Business Computer Skills, Word Processing, Intro to Microcomputers and Intro to Spreadsheets.
Business Courses
Business courses will also prepare administrators with the corporate aspects of the healthcare industry. Several classes are offered for the completion of the degree's prerequisites: Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Business Communication, Principles of Management, Introduction to Business, Business Law, Human Resource Management, and Organizational Communication.
Introductory Healthcare Courses
Some programs require participants to take healthcare courses before declaring Healthcare Administration as their major. Courses may include The Health Care System, Medical or Healthcare Terminology, and Principles of Health Care Administration.
