Learning a foreign language can be invigorating and intellectually stimulating. Most people, however, get hung up on their new language's vocabulary--with thousands of new words to learn, it can be hard to stay positive and enjoy the experience. Here are some tips that'll help you lock in those foreign phrases and remember them for the future.

1. Get your mouth and hands involved when memorizing vocabulary. Every time you learn a new list of words, copy them out by hand and say them out loud.
2. Use flash cards to learn new words. For some foreign language students this is enough, but others will need to use this and other methods simultaneously for the best results.
3. Write in the language every day. Many students have no idea how helpful this is. Writing forces you to produce vocabulary words on your own, without prompting from a list, which really locks it in.
4. Review a word once you've learned it. Students in introductory language courses often learn a word for an exam or quiz and promptly forget it. Instead, keep your vocabulary lists handy and read through them everyday.
5. Watch television shows and listen to radio broadcasts in the foreign language. Hearing native speakers use the language in real situations helps you develop an intuitive understanding of how the vocabulary functions in context.
6. Read in the foreign language everyday. Start with children's literature, then move onto newspapers and magazines. Just like English, reading is a great way to learn vocabulary in another language.
