Write A Letter Requesting Admission To A College

Writing a great admissions letter is important when applying to a college.


You have worked your way through high school,and now college is right around the corner. After drafting a list of the colleges you would like to attend, the next task is requesting admission. Each school has a different process, but they all begin with a letter. Take your time and create an impressive letter requesting admission.


Instructions


1. Review the admissions instructions on the college website for the school you wish to attend and request an admissions package. Each college is different and has unique requirements, so make sure you follow the rules specific to that school.


2. Address your letter. You need to determine the appropriate person to whom to address your letter. Most likely, this will be the Dean of Admissions. Be sure to include the complete address and spell the Dean's name correctly, then address them as Mr., Ms., Mrs., Miss or Dr., depending on their title.








3. Be specific and concise. Get to the point and stick with it. Let the Dean of Admissions know why you have chosen this college and the course of study in which you are interested. Provide details on any high school courses or other training that have prepared you to pursue your field of choice.


4. Include references. Letters of recommendation to accompany your letter will certainly help your chances of getting admitted to the college of your choice. Mention in your own letter any personal references and attach their letters, following the admissions package instructions. References could include high school teachers, coaches, guidance counselors, principal, employers, youth pastors and others who know your abilities and character.








5. Offer personal details. Your letter is a first glimpse into who you are and the type of college student you will be. Share about any volunteer work you have performed, school leadership roles you have held, honors you have earned, and other personal details that help the admissions representative learn more about you.


6. Edit your letter. Ask an English or business education teacher, as well as your guidance counselor, to proofread your letter and offer any suggestions.
