National Institutes of Health awards invidual fellowships.
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the federal government's agency for conducting and funding medical research. It is made up of 27 institutes and centers. In 2009, NIH had a $30.6 billion budget. There are four groups of individual fellowships for scientists and students, all named after Ruth Kirschstein, the first female to head an NIH Institute. The awards are categorized by agency codes. All award applications are available on the NIH website.
Dual Doctoral Degree Fellowships (F30)
There are two fellowships for students earning dual doctoral degrees such as a Doctor of Medicine/Doctor of Philosophy. Institutes who participate in the first award program select qualified students who they feel will become productive physician-scientists and add to the number of highly-trained investigators in clinical research. The second fellowship is granted by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) to support students interested in heart, blood, vascular and lung diseases as well as sleep disorders. The award can be used for research or career development. Award amounts vary for both programs depending on the quality of applications and the NIH budget.
Diversity, Service, Nursing and Neurology Awards (F31)
NIH gives four awards in the F31 category. Qualified minority economically disadvantaged or disabled students can apply for a research fellowship supported by 21 Institutes. A fellowship to help students complete the research for their dissertation is supported by eight institutes. The National Institute of Nursing Research supports the work of students in nursing doctoral programs. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awards a fellowship to MD/PhD students who propose research projects in line with the NINDS's mission. The number of fellowships winners and award amounts vary depending on the quality of the applications for each fellowship.
Investigative Research and Epidemiology Fellowships (F32)
Students with intentions to become research investigators can apply for a grant supported by 21 institutes. The award cannot be used toward the costs of a health professional degree. The number of fellowships winners and award amounts vary depending on the quality of the applications. The American Skin Association and the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases support a postdoctoral fellowship in epidemiology, clinical trials and skin disease research. Physicians with expertise in clinical dermatology are eligible. Two fellowships are awarded per year.
Experienced Scientists (F33)
Fifteen institutes support a fellowship for experienced scientists seeking to change the direction of their careers or acquire new research skills. Award amounts vary but the duration of the fellowship typically last up to two years. Fellows can use their stipend to enroll in academic programs, travel overseas for research, pay for accommodations at workshops and other educational activities.
