Students preparing for college must comply with the school's specific admission requirements.
To be admitted to college in New York or in any other state, you must complete a series of requirements. Colleges in New York and elsewhere require students to complete certain high school level courses. Second, they require students to complete an entrance exam such as the SAT or the ACT. Third, students must prepare transcripts, personal statements, references and other documents to fill out the school's application.
Complete Required Courses
New York colleges require students to complete certain coursework in order to be eligible for admission. For example, prospective New York University students are required to complete four years of English courses, four years of history courses and two years of foreign language courses. Additionally, students must complete three years of math and three years of science. However, if students complete more than the minimum required coursework, their applications are stronger. Additionally, the better grades you earn, the stronger your application will be.
Take the Entrance Exam
Generally, New York students are required to complete the SAT Reasoning Test, two SAT Subject Tests, or the ACT. These college entrance exams tests students' mastery of logical and critical thinking, along with their mastery of various required subjects, such as reading comprehension and advanced mathematics. In order to earn the best scores on these exams, students should consider taking a preparatory course. High schools routinely offer students practice SAT exams at dates throughout the school year.
Prepare Personal Statement and List of References
As part of the application process, students will need to prepare personal statements. The statements often explain your reason for applying to the school, or a specific program in the school. Additionally, the statements give you the opportunity to explain your background. The statements should be used to expound upon qualities that are not evident from other parts of your application. You'll also be required to list several references. These references should be able to discuss your academic and personal strengths.
Other Application Considerations
When your application is being considered by the school's admission committee, they will judge your fit for the program based your entire application. They may consider the rigor of your classes, your rank and GPA, the quality of your essay and references. Non-academic criteria include your interview, extracurricular activities, personal character, whether you are the first in your family to attend college, or whether you are related to an alumni of the campus. Other factors considered include your state of residency, ethnic background, volunteer and work experience and your level of interest in the school.
