New York Engineering Colleges

The New York State Department of Education's Office of the Professions sets the standards for professional engineer licensing in the state. Though varying within each specialty, the education and experience requirements mandate that students receive a minimum of a bachelor's degree in their field. For residents of New York, some colleges and universities within the state offer programs that fulfill these requirements.


Stony Brook University








Part of the State University of New York network of public colleges, Stony Brook University is located in the suburban setting of Stony Brook along the northern shore of Long Island. The school was founded in 1957 and has an enrollment of 15,924 undergraduate students. The College of Engineering and Applied Science at Stony Brook grants a bachelor's degree in biomedical chemical, computer, electrical and mechanical engineering. For the 2009-10 school year, the cost of one year's undergraduate tuition at Stony Brook was $6,430 for New York residents and $14,330 for non-residents. The school also awards master's and doctoral degrees in biomedical and electrical engineering as well as a master's in mechanical engineering.

New York Institute of Technology


Also located on Long Island, the New York Institute of Technology is a private college founded in 1955. Over 7,000 students study at the institute each year. The School of Engineering and Computer Science grants bachelor's degrees in electrical and computer engineering, mechanical engineering and engineering management. During the 2009-10 school year, the cost of tuition was $24,140 per year for undergraduates. New York Institute of Technology also offers a master's degree in electrical and computer engineering.

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute


Founded in 1824, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is a private institution with an undergraduate enrollment of over 5,000 students and a location 8 miles northeast of Albany in the suburban environment of Troy. The university received the honor of 42nd-place ranking among all universities nationwide in "U.S. News and World Report's Best Colleges of 2010." The School of Engineering grants bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in a variety of areas, including aerospace, biomedical, biological and chemical, civil, computer environmental, electrical, materials, nuclear and systems engineering. The cost of one year's tuition and fees for undergraduates at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute averaged $39,165 for the 2009-10 school year.

Rochester Institute of Technology


Over 13,000 undergraduate students attend the Rochester Institute of Technology, which was founded in 1829 as a private college. The school offers bachelor's programs in computer, electrical, industrial, materials, mechanical, software and sustainable engineering. The university's masters programs received the honor of a ninth-place ranking among programs offered by northern universities. Graduate degrees in engineering feature specialties in electrical, industrial, mechanical, microelectronics manufacturing, sustainable and systems. For the 2009-10 school year, the cost of tuition and fees at Rochester Institute of Technology were $29,283.
