A Master of Fine Arts degree in photography is often considered the starting point for a career in commercial photography, fine art, post-secondary education or gallery or museum management. If you have a passion for photography and are planning for a career in this creative field, getting your MFA in photography can be a springboard to success.
Instructions
Apply to Graduate School
1. Finish your bachelor's degree. You must complete a four-year degree from an accredited college or university before you can enter any graduate education program, including an MFA in photography.
2. Build your portfolio. You will need a well-balanced portfolio showing your growth and strengths as a photographer. Check with the graduate school you plan to attend for any special requirements.
3. Write a statement of purpose. This brief essay of 250 to 500 words describes why you want to earn your MFA in photography. This must be included with your application to graduate school.
4. Find three references. You will need to submit three letters of recommendation with your application to graduate school. These references should be individuals who know you professionally and are familiar with your work.
5. Complete the application form for your chosen school and submit it along with your previous university transcripts and all other requirement materials.
Complete Your Degree
6. Attend all required classes and seminars. Although it may be easy to get caught up in the creative process and feel that attending lectures is unimportant, you will need to participate in discussions and share ideas with your instructors and classmates to get your MFA in photography.
7. Explore the unknown. Stretching yourself and your abilities is an important part of an MFA degree. Be willing to step outside your comfort zone and experiment with new techniques and ideas.
8. Create a thesis. You will need to submit a thesis outline for approval during the second year of your graduate education. Once you have completed it, you will need to present it at the end of your program and face a thesis review to receive final credit for your program.
