Majoring in public relations can help you gain entry into a public relations career with an agency, private company or non-profit organization. The Public Relations Society of America is the world's largest organized network of public relations, or PR, professionals, and defines PR as helping "an organization and its publics adapt mutually to each other." Your college degree in PR is an important first step in gaining the necessary skills to helping organizations achieve their PR goals.
Instructions
1. Research colleges offering a public relations degree. You will find that many universities have their public relations degree programs under communications. The website, Education-Portal.com, lists several colleges and universities ranked by major publications as providing high-quality public relations degree programs.
2. Speak to a high school or other academic counselor. If you are in high school, your college adviser or counselor can help you determine if public relations is a good choice for you. If you are changing majors, ask to speak to an adviser in the public relations department. Other adults considering the major should visit the college and ask to speak to an academic adviser.
3. Take a public relations course. If you are a college freshman, take one public relations class, along with general studies courses that will apply to any degree. This will help you determine if public relations is a good fit before you declare public relations as your major, or change from your current major.
4. Go the public relations department and tell the adviser you want to declare public relations as your major. An adviser will help you choose your class schedule for the semester so that you fulfill your requirements.
