Instructions
1. Prepare a professional resume. Your resume should include relevant information about your qualifications as a nurse. For example, your resume should address your educational credentials, relevant work experience as a nurse (including volunteer work), clinical training, internship, areas of expertise or specialty--such as pediatrics, gerontology, ambulatory care or maternity--and special skills you possess. Be sure to highlight any administrative experience you might have as a nurse, such as serving as head nurse or assistant unit manager in a hospital.
2. Contact local medical facilities about job openings. Nurses can work in a variety of settings, like hospitals, nursing homes, physician offices, schools and colleges, daycare centers, rehabilitation centers or with a home health agency. You can learn more about the current job openings in or around your city by contacting the Human Resources department at these types of medical facilities.
3. Browse for jobs on the Internet. There are several employment websites on the Internet that provide an abundance of information about local and national nursing jobs. These sites allow you to search for nursing jobs by city and state or by areas of expertise.
4. Speak with a career counselor about your goals. A career counselor can assist you with the job search process and help you find a nursing job that best suits your needs. You can meet with a career counselor at a local college, university or employment agency. Career counseling services are often free of charge for the applicant.
5. Submit an application for employment to each position you feel might be a good fit for your nursing credentials and experience. Be sure to include a copy of your resume with your application, along with a copy of your nursing license or certificate. In addition, some employers require applicants to submit a cover letter.
