Masters Degree Programs In Computer Science In Georgia

A masters degree in computer science can help students get jobs in the computer science field, or can be a step along the way to a Ph.D.

Masters degrees in computer science lead are essential for many careers and can also be a first step toward getting a Ph.D. in computer science. Three of the biggest colleges in Georgia are the University of Georgia at Athens, Georgia State University and Kennesaw State University. All three of these schools offer masters degree programs in computer science.

The University of Georgia M.S. in Computer Science

The University of Georgia at Athens graduate school website says that the strengths of its computer science department are theory, systems, information systems and artificial intelligence (see Reference 1). The M.S. in computer science helps students who want to pursue a Ph.D. in computer science or who want a job in the industry after finishing a masters degree.

Admission to this program is competitive, and students with a bachelor's degree in computer science are strongly preferred. Applicants need at least three letters of recommendation, a personal statement explaining how the candidate will use and excel in this degree and GRE test scores. Students accepted into the program who have a bachelor's degree in something other than computer science have to take undergraduate classes in computer science in addition to their masters level courses. The masters program generally takes two years, but it may take longer for students who do not have a strong background in computer science.

Georgia State University M.S. in Computer Science

The computer science department at Georgia State University does research in several different areas and also collaborates with several other departments at Georgia State University. According to the department's website, its primary areas of research are bioinformatics, graphics, visualization, networks, distributed systems and algorithms (see Reference 2). The computer science department collaborates with the chemistry, physics, biology, astronomy, mathematics and statistics departments on campus. Graduate students are also offered research, laboratory and teaching opportunities (see Resource 1).

Admission requirements for this program include three letters of recommendation, an application to the computer science department, a personal statement outlining the candidate's background and goals and a bachelor's degree (see Resource 1). Students with bachelor's degrees in computer science are given preference but applicants with degrees in other fields can still be admitted as long as they are willing to take some extra undergraduate courses in computer science.

Kennesaw State University M.S. in Applied Computer Science

Kennesaw State University offers classes taught in classrooms but also records classes electronically and allows students to complete work and view lectures on the Internet (see Resource 2). This distance education option makes Kennesaw State University a convenient school choice for students with busy work schedules, children to take care of and other responsibilities that conflict with class times.

Kennesaw State University offers an M.S.A.C.S. degree, which stands for a masters of science in applied computer science. The M.S.A.C.S. degree is a five-semester program that offers courses in embedded systems, robotics, artificial intelligence, search engines, data mining, software engineering, databases, database security, digital game design, active web server pages, Linux and Python (see Resource 2). This degree helps students find jobs in the computer science field or gain admission to Ph.D. programs. This program is also special because it accepts students without bachelor's degrees who have some experience in the computer science field. According to the school's website, some students are accepted into the program but must take foundation courses before starting graduate level classes (see Reference 3). A resume and GRE, GMAT or prior masters degrees are also required for admission.
