Scholarships targeted to African-American women over 40 include the AARP Women's Scholarship Program.
For women seeking higher education during their 40s, the obstacles can seem daunting. However, for women of color--particularly African-Americans--grants and scholarships are available to help ease the financial burden of paying for school or obtaining job training. These organizations include the American Association of University Women, AARP and the Jeannette Rankin Women's Scholarship Fund.
AARP Women's Scholarship Program
AARP is a non-profit organization that offers up to 100 scholarships to low-income women seeking educational advancement and job training. This program targets women returning to work following an absence of at least five years; women caring for relatives' children; and women working in low-paying jobs with limited career opportunities. Eligible candidates must be a U.S. citizen, at least 40 years old and demonstrate financial need. In addition, applicants must be enrolled in an accredited college, university or technical training program within six months of the scholarship deadline. Scholarship awards range from $500 to $5,000.
