North Carolina is home to many colleges and universities. However, there are three major colleges in North Carolina known as the "Research Triangle." Included in the research triangle is the University of North Carolina, North Carolina State University and Duke University.
University of North Carolina
The University of North Carolina (UNC) is located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, which is in the central part of the state. UNC was founded in 1795, making it the oldest public university in the United States. UNC is a public Tier 1 research university, which means it maintains a high level of research activity. Along with a historical tradition of academics, UNC is also known for its athletic programs, particularly men's basketball. A longstanding rivalry exists between UNC and Duke University. UNC is part of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).

Duke University
Duke University is located in Durham, North Carolina, which is in the north and central region of the state. It is a private research university that was founded in 1838 by the Methodists and Quakers. According to "U.S. News and World Report," Duke's undergraduate education was ranked in the top 10 in 2010. Further, its medical, law, and business graduate programs were all ranked among the top 12 in 2010. Duke has a strong athletic tradition and is part of the ACC.

North Carolina State University
North Carolina State University (NC State) is a public research university located in Raleigh, North Carolina. NC State is unique to North Carolina because it is the primary technological institute in the state. With more than 31,000 undergraduates and 8,000 faculty as of 2010, NC State focuses much of its research and teaching in the fields of engineering, mathematics, science and technology. Like both of the other schools in the research triangle, NC State has a major athletics program that competes in the ACC.
