Taiwan Work Permit Requirements

Taiwan imposes limitations on the kinds of jobs foreigners can hold in the country.

To protect the jobs of its citizens, Taiwan implements certain limitations on the kinds of employment foreigners can hold in the country. Foreigners seeking a career in Taiwan should first make sure they fulfill the government requirements to legally work in the country before attempting to make any big moving decisions.

Job Limitations

Foreigners who want to work in Taiwan should apply with the Council of Labor Affairs. Foreigners are limited to finding work in specific areas, which include specialized or technical work; a director, executive, or managerial position of a business invested in or created by foreigners; a teaching position at a public or registered private school; a foreign language teaching job; a coaching position for sports or athletes; religious, artistic and performance-related work; and work as a crew member of a merchant or work ship. Those seeking a job on a ship should apply directly to the Ministry of Transportation and Communications.

Health Requirements for Teachers

Foreigners seeking a work permit in Taiwan for the purposes of teaching classes for three months or longer are required to undergo a health examination. Applicants should submit a health examination certificate that is recognized by Taiwan's Department of Health within three months of the application. Any health documents that are produced in a foreign country must be verified by officials at the representative office of the Republic of China (Taiwan) in that country.

Students on Work Study

Foreign students who wish to work while still in school can apply for a work permit in Taiwan, provided they have studied at school for two semesters or have taken a language class for one year. The student must show an excellent scholastic record, while also fulfilling one of the following requirements: the student can provide evidence that a serious event has affected his ability to financially support himself or continue his education; the student's school requires him to assist in its work or research; or the student needs to participate in off-campus work that is related to his or her field of study.
