A conclusion wraps up an essay.
An ending paragraph in an essay, or a conclusion, should summarize the essay's main idea, reevaluate all the points that have been made and tie the ideas together in a final, coherent explanation. Conclusions are somewhat formulaic, and can be successfully written when the writer stays focused on the essay's topic, reiterates the arguments already made in the body of the paper and draws thought-provoking concluding ideas.
Instructions
1. Restate the main idea and explain why the essay's ideas are necessary and significant. In the first sentence of the conclusion, revisit the thesis of the argument that was presented in the introduction. Do not write the exact same sentence and do not just reword the thesis statement. Instead, connect the thesis statement to a broader idea by explaining its importance in the real world.
2. Summarize and synthesize the body paragraphs. In one or two sentences, connect the topic sentences of each body paragraph. Fuse together the ideas in each of the body paragraphs by showing how each is relevant to the next, according to St. Cloud State University's LEO: Literacy Education Online website.
3. Leave the reader with an idea to ponder. The University of North Carolina's Writing Center suggests providing a solution to the issue presented, or asking questions that can be visited in further research. When a reader finishes the conclusion, he should feel that he learned something important and relevant from the paper.
