The convenience of distance learning for your postgraduate degree is a noted benefit.
Online learning has increased tremendously since 2002. Once considered suspect, with major universities such as Harvard offering distance learning courses this new educational format has gained in respectability and popularity. While undergraduate programs are abundant, postgraduate degrees are sprouting up offering the same convenience and flexibility for students who want to further their education while balancing career and family obligations.
Master's Degree Programs
Harvard University has expanded education programs beyond their brick walls.
Those who have obtained a four-year undergraduate degree are eligible to apply to enroll in a master's program. Online master's degrees are available in almost every field and subject. Depending upon the college or university, entrance exams such as the GRE may be required as part of the admissions process. Course requirements and minimum credit hours are the same for online degree seekers as for students attending regular classes in brick and mortar schools. As an example, Harvard University offers master's degree studies in over 20 different fields.
Doctoral Degree Programs
While doctorate degree programs are less commonly found online, a few universities have tailored their programs to meet the rising demand. Doctoral candidates are typically required to perform in-depth research, work with a supervising professor and meet with a Ph.D. candidate's committee frequently through the typically five-year process. This can be difficult in an online format; however, responding to students requests for such, some colleges have begun this shift. Walden University is one school that has undertaken online doctoral degrees, offering 10 different programs with over 60 specializations.
Benefits of Distance Learning
Distance learning at the postgraduate level provides students with many benefits and conveniences. Most students who are working on graduate degrees have begun their careers and many others have also started families. Online learning provides accessibility 24/7, allowing advanced degree students flexibility to fit study and class time into their schedules. Students also have the opportunity to study through universities around the world and are not limited by colleges within their local area. Many colleges offer accelerated programs with five- to seven-week semesters, rather than through the traditional twelve-week terms. Cost savings on gas, parking, and childcare is an added benefit to online degree programs.
Cautions and Warnings
Before applying to a postgraduate program, make sure the particular school and degree offered is one that fits your needs. While a college may offer a master's degree in education, if it does not qualify for your state's teacher's licensing requirements it will be of little use, and the credits may not be transferable. Make sure the college or university has regional or national accreditation. Beware of online "degree mills" or colleges which offer postgraduate degrees in a matter of weeks or months. Also, make sure --- if the college is at a great distance --- a course does not have a blended component for which you must meet in person on occasion. Carefully read the course or degree program description requirements.
