Get A Waiver For Selective Service Registration

It is required that all US male citizens register for the Selective Service within 30 days before or after their 18th birthday. There are situations, however, where a man may have failed to register within the allotted time; before he has reached his 26th birthday. Not being registered makes you ineligible for all federal financial aid, and many different job opportunities. Here are the steps to take in order to get a waiver when you have missed registering for the Selective Service.

Instructions

1. Contact the Selective Service Registrar in order to obtain a written document stating that your situation is one that did not require registration. Call 1-847-688-6888 to talk to an operator within the registrar system.

2. Be ready to explain why you did not register-this will be the basis of the Selective Service documentation that you were not in fact, intentionally dodging the requirement to register. Maybe you were not living in the country until after your 26th birthday, or maybe you were denied entrance into the military and in the process forgot to register. Either way, be prepared to share you reasons and proper documentation to fully defend your failure to register.

3. The Selective Service System will then send you a letter called the status information letter. This is the letter that you will present to the agency from which you are trying to receive services; financial assistance, and so forth. If you have presented your case well, the said agency will then use the letter to decide whether or not you are eligible for their job, scholarship, or financial aid.
