A gynecologist is a physician who deals primarily with the health of the female reproductive system. Gynecologists will generally diagnose and treat disorders and diseases.
College Degree
First, you must attain a good GPA from a university and graduate with a bachelor's degree. You should generally study the following subjects: biology, organic chemistry, calculus, physics, English and anatomy.
MCAT
You need to take the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) in order to apply for admission to medical schools.
Medical School
Medical school lasts for four years. You will participate in the same classes and clinics as everyone else, even though your aim is to be a gynecologist. This is because you do not specialize in an area of medicine until you are a resident in a hospital. During the fourth and final year of med school, you will apply for entry into a residency program, which you will attend after you graduate.
Residency
The residency program lasts for four years and this is when you specialize in gynecology. Your will rotate your working shifts in these areas: obstetrics, gynecology, gynecologic oncology, reproductive endocrinology and ultrasonography.
Board Certification
You are eligible to take your board exams after you complete your residency. These exams are proctored by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and are written tests that demonstrate your knowledge of the medical and surgical care of women. Once you pass these exams, you will be board certified as a gynecologist.
