Preschool assistant teaching is a hands-on position working with children ages 3 to 5.
While the lead teacher is the engine that makes the preschool class go, the assistant is the fuel. He is flexible, has a variable workload and is available to take on both new and regular tasks at the lead teacher's request. A teaching assistant gains extensive knowledge and experience in how a classroom is run and sees first-hand what would be required of him if he chooses to further his career in preschool teaching.
Teaching Duties
Assistant teachers help the lead teacher in planning activities, giving instruction and checking on the progress of the students with their assignments. When the lead teacher is out sick or on vacation, the assistant often will take on all teaching duties of the classroom. The assistant's ability to understand and engage with the lesson planning and implementation is essential in the classroom.
Supervision Duties
During work and play, especially on the playground, assistant teachers observe the children to ensure their safety. They will step in to discipline, if needed, in the manner discussed with the lead teacher. The rules and regulations of the playground vary among schools regarding climbing, rough-housing and allowable games among the children.
Office Duties
Assistant teachers are often in charge of making copies for the class, filing and sending notes home with the students. They assist the teacher with grading and paperwork as needed. Office work may also include preparation for current or upcoming lessons, organizing the lead teacher's desk or files, updating student information, and conducting written communication with other teachers, schools and parents.
Evaluation Duties
Assistant teachers will participate in evaluation of the students on a daily, weekly and semester basis. He will assist in end-of-term evaluations and parent conferences as needed. The assistant teacher's daily interaction with the students is integral in accurate evaluation of progress of each student. Assistant teachers will not be the main contact with parents, but must be aware of all students' current progress to assist the lead teacher in educating the children.
