The University Of California'S Medical Schools







Of the 10 University of California campuses, five have medical schools: Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco. Each one is recognized by the "U.S. News & World Report" college rankings as a top medical school in the country for either research, primary care training or both.


UC Davis


The UC Davis School of Medicine is in Sacramento, 17 miles east of the main UC Davis campus. It has about 360 medical students and offers an M.D. degree, dual degrees and several training and certificate programs. "U.S. News & World Report" ranked it the 20th best medical school for primary care training in 2010. It is affiliated with the UC Davis Medical Center, as is the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing.

Irvine


The UC Irvine School of Medicine is in Irvine in south Orange County. It also encompasses the UC Irvine Douglas Hospital, about 10 miles north in the city of Orange. It offers an M.D. degree and several dual degree programs. It has about 400 medical students and is ranked the 47th best medical school for research by "U.S. News."

Los Angeles


The David Geffen School of Medicine is at the main UCLA campus in the Westwood area of Los Angeles. It has about 750 medical students and offers an M.D. degree as well as numerous doctorates and dual degrees. Its affiliated hospital, the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, has ranked as one of the best medical centers in the country for 14 consecutive years, as of 2010. The school itself ranks 11th best medical school for research and 14th best for primary care training, according to "U.S. News."

San Diego


The UC San Diego School of Medicine is in La Jolla, a northern suburb of San Diego. "U.S. News" ranked it the 16th best medical school in the U.S. for research, as of 2010. It offers an M.D. degree, a medical scientist training program and numerous dual degrees, master's degrees and doctorates.

San Francisco


The UC San Francisco School of Medicine has facilities at 11 sites around San Francisco and in the central California city of Fresno. The main site is in Parnassus Heights, next to Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. It offers an M.D. degree, a medical scientist training program and several dual degrees. As of 2010, "U.S. News" ranked it the fourth best school for medical research and fifth best for primary care training.
