New York Online Colleges

Getting your degree online through an accredited New York college has become a lot easier in the past few years.

Distance learning has grown in prestige and recognition in recent years, and many accredited universities across the country offer courses or even degrees almost entirely online. New York has a large number of universities that fall into this category, although each college has its own admission requirements and stipulations. Depending on your career goal, New York may have the kind of online degree or certificate program you've been looking for.

State College of New York

State University of New York (SUNY) has several campuses spread out across New York State and Manhattan, but it also has the "SUNY Learning Network": an extensive online program offering both undergraduate and graduate degrees based out of participating SUNY branches. Many degrees are available completely online, while others allow you the option to split the coursework between on-campus work and online lectures. Several concentrations are available, including cultural studies, business management and health services administration. Depending on your needs, you can choose from an associate, bachelor's or master's degree, or you can take classes individually. All degrees are awarded by SUNY's main branch, so it's equal to any degree earned entirely on-campus.

Berkeley College

With its headquarters in midtown Manhattan, Berkeley College's distance education program focuses mostly on undergraduate degrees in business- and management-related fields, with associate and bachelor's degrees available entirely online. Concentrations include fields like international business, fashion management and criminal justice. Class participation is strongly encouraged, and in some courses, your contribution to online discussions will be the deciding factor in your grade. The program is flexible if you want to take classes part-time, but if you prefer to finish your degree as quickly as possible, Berkeley offers the option of finishing an associate degree in 18 months or a bachelor's degree in 3 years. Just like taking courses on-campus, how fast you finish depends on how many classes you take each semester.

Columbia University

With its Ivy League reputation, Columbia University is a well-known establishment with colleges throughout Manhattan dedicated to different career pursuits. In recent years, two of Columbia's branches began offering a total of 30 professional certificates, master's and doctoral degrees online: the Fu Foundation School of Engineering, and the Teacher's College. These schools utilize the Columbia Video Network (CVN), allowing students to upload their homework directly online. The unique feature about Columbia's online degree program is the fact no transcripts from previous colleges are necessary during your first semester. Additionally, if your background in engineering is strong enough, you don't need to formally matriculate for the first semester. Degree concentrations are available in many fields, including biomedical, civil and electrical engineering; certificates are offered from the Teacher's College in subjects like "cognition and technology" and "designing interactive multimedia instruction."
