1. Study the bachelor's degree programs for public administration at several colleges. You'll find classes on government, communications, legal topics, budgeting and finance. While many of the core courses will be similar, a few may have electives that are appealing.
2. Decide whether you wish to specialize in governmental or nonprofit agencies. Taking courses covering both fields will offer more employment opportunities upon graduation from college with a bachelor's degree in public administration.
3. Volunteer with a nonprofit organization, if that's your area of focus. Talk to department directors about their duties. For governing experience, get involved in student government, including leadership positions in clubs or on committees.
