Independent private secondary schools are noted for providing a quality of education unmatched by public educational institutions. While they are often costly, and their admission processes extremely competitive, these schools' immense financial and educational resources make them an excellent starting point for gaining admission to Ivy League universities.
Trinity School
Trinity School was established in 1709, and is currently located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, NY. Trinity has an average enrollment of 960 students, spanning from kindergarten through 12th grade. As documented in Forbes's 2010 statistics, Trinity boasts a $40.4 million endowment and a 6 to 1 student to faculty ratio, with 41 percent of its graduates finding places at MIT, Stanford, or Ivy League Schools. Application for Trinity's high school is extremely competitive; an average of only 45 students enter the 9th grade each year.
Horace Mann School
Horace Mann was founded in 1887 and enrolls 1,781 students from nursery through high school, 723 of those in grades 9 to 12. This upper school campus of Horace Mann's is located in New York City's Bronx borough, overlooking Van Cortlandt Park. The campus bears a 650-seat theater, a gym, and sizable athletic facilities, including a number of tennis courts. As of 2010, the school has a 12 to 1 student to faculty ratio, and just over a third of its students advance to Ivy League schools, MIT, or Stanford.
Phillips Academy Andover
Phillips Academy Andover, founded in 1778, is located in Andover, Massachusetts. Phillips is primarily a boarding school: according to the Andover's 2010 statistics, approximately 800 of its 1,100 students reside on the school's 500-acre campus, which also sports multiple art galleries and museums. According to 2010 statistics, the school has a 5 to 1 student to faculty ratio and an endowment of nearly $700 million. About a third of Andover's graduates advance to MIT, Stanford, or one of the Ivy League schools.
The Roxbury Latin School
Roxbury Latin is a boys' day school founded in 1645, located in Boston's West Roxbury section. According to Roxbury's 2010 statistics, 294 students attend 7th through 12th grade on its 120-acre campus, which also includes eight athletic fields and ten tennis courts. The school boasts an 8 to 1 student to faculty ratio and a $100 million endowment. 36 percent of Roxbury Latin's graduates advance to Ivy League schools, MIT, or Stanford.
