Online Interior Decorating Classes

Most brick-and-mortar colleges across the nation now offer the opportunity to "e-learn" (take classes online). There are also the training schools that established themselves as online campuses from the outset. Online learning began with what was known as "home study courses" and caught on gradually with traditional schools because of the flexibility for working persons. It is now possible to get a certificate or a degree in Interior Design online.

Courses and Benefits

The benefits of online study are usually that the training is self-paced, flexible and less expensive. The courses you can take include visual basics, the history of architecture and design, the use of fabrics and finishes, and more.

Disadvantages

Some disadvantages include missing out on classroom teacher rapport and classmate camaraderie; also classrooms have labs and materials and mood-enhancing "atmosphere." Some people do prefer self-directed study and autonomy, however.

Time Frame

Courses can take anywhere from 3 months to 2 years, depending on whether you are working toward a certificate, diploma or degree.

Online Schools and Prices

Home study courses can cost as little as $500, depending on the school and length of time to study. The Penn Foster School has been around for more than 100 years and was begun by a newspaperman by the name of Thomas J. Foster in 1890 (see Resources).

Warning

Before enrolling in an online course, be sure that it is a recognized institution in your state's private post-secondary education records and is authorized to grant diplomas or degrees. Nationally, check with the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council listed by the U.S. Department of Education
