How You Can Get Into the Navy With a GED
In the United States, you can get into the Navy with a GED. The U.S. Navy requires anyone enlisting to be a high school graduate or a high school equivalency credential holder. You can enlist in the Navy if you're between the ages of 17 and 34, you are not a single parent, you have fewer than two dependents, and you can pass the Navy's eligibility requirements regarding drugs, alcohol, medical conditions, legal conditions and U.S. citizenship. You're considered a high school equivalency credential holder if you've acquired a test-based general equivalency development diploma (GED).
Instructions
1. Attend a college. To increase your chance of getting into the Navy with a GED, attend college and earn at least 15 credit hours. The Navy only allows less than 4 percent of its personnel to be high school equivalency credential holders. This means that you can get into the Navy with a GED, but you will have to meet every other requirement perfectly and having at least 15 college credit hours under your belt is often recommended.
2. Visit your local Navy recruiter. This is the first step for all Navy applicants. You'll need to take a variety of items with you that your recruiter will require. Take with you your birth certificate, Social Security card, and a list of all places you've worked, lived, and other countries you've visited since the age of 16. Also take with you a list of all medications you're on and all medical problems you've ever had in your life. Take with you a list of all police involvement you've had throughout your life and contact information for at least four character references. If you're not a U.S. citizen, you'll need to additionally provide to your recruiter all green card numbers and ports of entry information on you and all of your family members.
3. Score high on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test and on your physical fitness test. All Navy applicants must take the ASVAB, which determines what careers in the Navy you may be most qualified for. The Navy tests to ensure that all applicants are physically and mentally able to fulfill duties in the Navy.
