What Technology Is Used For An Online Education Degree

Today, the computer isn't just a part of the classroom, it often is the classroom.

The basic requirements for taking online classes include a computer with sufficient memory, an up-to-date web browser, reliable Internet access, a valid email account and word processing software. Antivirus and backup software are also highly recommended.

The Computer

The computer needs to have enough memory and processing power to handle the online classroom software, applications such as Word and an Internet connection. Typically, a computer that is less than three years old will have enough processing power and memory to handle the task. Recommended memory and system requirements are usually listed on a school's website. Internet access is a must; the faster the connection, the better, although it is not necessary to have top-of-the-line equipment to take online classes.

Email Account

A valid email account is needed for the school to be able to contact the student. A student's Internet provider usually provides email service, although free email accounts such as those offered by Yahoo, Hotmail or Gmail are also fine. Setting up a separate email account for the school is not necessary.

Internet Browser

A browser is the most important piece of software an online student will use. The choice of a browser is a personal preference, although students need to keep in mind that some schools will offer content requiring specific browser plug-in applications, such as Sun's Java virtual machine. Open-source browsers, such as Mozilla Firefox, offer a variety of plug-ins and tools that students may find helpful.

Media (Sound and Video)

Some online classes feature audio and video clips. A sound card and speakers are necessary to use these features. A microphone and web camera are optional but may also be used in some classes, depending on the course of study (such as a language class).

Antivirus and Backup Software

Students (and all computer users) should consider installing a reputable antivirus software program on their computer. Anti-phishing and other Internet security features are highly desirable, too. Backup software should be a part of every computer system. Students should back up their work frequently. Term papers and other work in progress can also be backed up simply by copying them to flash drives or emailing them to oneself. The school may also offer a work area in the classroom where students can save their work in progress.

Recommended Software

Perhaps the most commonly used software package is Microsoft Word. Generally, schools and teachers require files in a format they can read, such as .doc or .rtf files. Any word processing software capable of handling these types of files is useable. Some classes may have specific requirements, and the student is expected to purchase software to complete a course.
