Without a graduate degree, you may find it difficult to find work as a physicist; otherwise, you may have to settle for basic lab duties.
Instructions
1. Get a bachelor's degree in physics. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), a bachelor's degree in physics is common in many colleges and universities. Typical courses include atom physics, thermodynamics, optics, electromagnetism and quantum mechanics. A bachelor's degree takes approximately 4 years to complete.
2. Apply to graduate programs. The criteria for admission typically includes a bachelor's degree in physics or a related subject; a specific grade point average, depending on the school; official student transcripts for proof; GRE test scores; letters of recommendation; and an essay, according to the Kent State University Department of Physics.
Before applying research different graduate schools along with the strength of their programs and the requirements for entry. Choose at least 5 schools that you believe you would qualify for and that have good programs.
3. Acquire a master's degree in physics. According to the BLS, a bachelor's degree is the prerequisite for a master's degree in physics and takes approximately 2 years to complete. A master's degree program prepares students for physics-related research and development that can be applied to private industries or teaching jobs in high schools or community and junior colleges.
4. Apply for a PhD program. As with the master's program, make sure to research schools before sending in your applications.
5. Gain a PhD degree in physics. According to the BLS, graduate students receive training in mathematics, theory and methodology. About 190 universities offer PhD degrees in physics. Many study for a doctorate immediately after receiving a bachelor's degree. A PhD program in physics takes 6 years to finish and culminates with a dissertation that includes original research. A PhD is required for most positions such as basic research, independent research within the industry, faculty positions at universities, and managerial positions.
