An LPN is a licensed practical nurse. Licensed practical nurses help patients in many different settings including nursing homes and hospitals. In order to become an LPN you must complete between nine months and two years of post-secondary academic training. Fortunately for those with busy schedules part of this training can be completed by taking online classes.

1. Start by carefully investigating LPN programs. In order to work as an LPN you must meet certain requirements. Such requirements include classes in patient care as well as classes in the hard sciences such as biology and chemistry. Taking an online program can help you meet such requirements but only if the school in question is licensed by the state. Check with your local board of nursing to make sure they are recognized in this manner.
2. Decide if you want to attend classes part-time or full time. Part time online nursing classes can work around your schedule as much as possible. If you take a full time online LPN courseload you may have to set aside a specific time frame each day just to make sure that you are attending classes. Even online classes require the student to adhere to certain deadlines.
3. Pay close attention to your instructor. LPN's are required to pass state licensing exams. These exams cover materials that have been touched on in classes. You cannot become an LPN unless you pass such exams. Ask your instructor questions about any materials that you do not understand. Make sure that you have learned the rudiments of patient care as well material pertaining to chemistry and biology.
4. Sign up to do your clinical education. LPN's must complete a term of clinical education in a hospital setting. This coursework cannot be completed online. A reputable LPN program will help you make arrangements to work with a hospital so you can complete your hands on requirements. A preceptor should be around to show you care for patients properly and perform basic medical procedures.
5. Pass NCLEX exams. The NCLEX will test your knowledge of nursing procedures. All LPN's must earn a passing grade on this multiple choice exam. You can apply to take it once you've passed all your online classes and completed your clinical education requirements.
