Calculate Your Wpm

How fast you type can expose how productive you are.

Typing is a necessary skill, whether you have to write essays in school or want to get a job that includes clerical work. If you are putting together a resume, you may want to list typing as one of your skills and include your words per minute (WPM). If you do not know how fast you type, you can test yourself.

Instructions

1. Go to a website that offers a free typing test such as TypingTest.com. (There is a link in the Resources section.) The test lasts only a minute.

2. Begin the test by typing the selection in the box provided. After the time is up, the test will provide your WPM. You can also see how many errors you made.

3. Open a word processor and use a book or magazine as your text sample.

4. Begin typing, and use a clock or stopwatch to time yourself. Stop after one minute; using the processor's word count function, determine how many characters you typed. Divide that number by 5 to determine your WPM.
