The GRE General Test is a standardized examination required for admission into some graduate school programs. The GRE Subject Test is an additional exam that can be taken along with the GRE General Test; it is typically not required for graduate school admission, but can be used as a way to emphasize specific knowledge in a particular subject. Some concentrations of the GRE Subject Test include biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics and psychology. When considering taking the GRE Subject Test, proper preparation is the essential.
Instructions
1. Decide which GRE Subject Test you are interested in taking. There are eight disciplines of the GRE Subject Test: Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Literature in English, Mathematics, Physics and Psychology.
2. Consider when you want to take the GRE Subject Test. The exam is only given three times each year--April, October and November. Find out the exact testing dates by accessing the GRE website at ets.org/gre. Make sure you give yourself enough time to study for the exam.
3. Begin studying for the GRE Subject Test at least four months before your projected test date. The GRE website offers free practice books for each subject, which can be downloaded directly to your computer or e-reader device. Additional test preparation tools include test-taking strategies and exam formats. Check your local bookstore for testing guides and more practice tests.
4. Register for the GRE Subject Test once you feel properly prepared to take the exam. The test is given as a paper exam at numerous testing sites, including your local library, Sylvan Learning Centers, college proctoring offices and U.S. military bases. Registration can be completed online at the GRE website or via mail. Mail registration forms can be downloaded at the GRE website. Acceptable forms of payment include PayPal, credit cards, E-Checks, money orders and certified checks.
5. Show up at your designated testing site on the day of your exam at least 30 minutes early. Plan to be at the testing site for at least three and a half hours. Take proper identification, as defined by the GRE website, along with your testing admission ticket. Testing admission tickets can be viewed and printed online at the GRE website.
