Calculate Grade Point Average

Need tutoring?

It is not difficult to calculate a grade point average once you understand some basic terminology. Students should try to calculate their grade point average each quarter to know where they stand in order to decide if they may need tutoring. It may become necessary to look into tutoring services if you calculate your grade point average and it is low. It is basically calculated by adding together the grade values and dividing by the total number of classes. The process is more in depth if you are calculating for college. See the process below.

Instructions

1. Write a list of each course with the letter assigned to it.

Each letter is assigned a value: A+ =4, A =4, A- =3.7, B+ =3.3, B =3, B- =2.7, C+ =2.3, C =2, C- =1.7, D+ =1.3, D=1, D- =.7 and F=0.

Write down the value for each letter you received next to the course.

2. Determine the amount of credit hours that were assigned to the course. Usually this is listed in the catalog and schedule of classes. Write this down next to each corresponding letter value.

3. Multiply the letter value with the credit hour for each course. This will give you the grade points for each course.

4. Add your grade points together to get a total. Finally, divide this number by the total amount of attempted hours (that is, the sum of all of your credit hours).

5. Use this information to determine if you need to consider tutoring to help raise your grades. Many scholarships and grants will not consider you if you do not meet the minimal guidelines.
