Discussion Topics For English Class

Students of all ages can benefit from lively interaction with their peers.

Communicating effectively is an important skill that will benefit a young person throughout his life. Engaging in open and lively discussions in English class will help a student articulate his feelings as well as practice speaking in front of a group of peers. Discussion topics can be anything from current events to favorite foods. Consider directing a discussion about topics related to the study of English, which will not only give oral communication practice, but will help students learn more about other aspects of their English course.

Developing Writing Skills

Brainstorm with students on effective ways they can improve and develop their writing skills. Through classes, feedback from teachers and peers, and a lot of practice, everyone can improve her written communication skills. Some students may suggest traditional and obvious answers, such as taking a writing class, while other students may hail blog writing as a modern and effective means to further a person's writing ability. Discussing this topic in an English class will give students ideas they can implement.

Plagiarism

A discussion about plagiarism is important for English class. Some students may not know what plagiarism is, and others may not understand the seriousness of committing it. Emphasise the moral and legal issues surrounding plagiarism. Help students understand the proper way to reference sources and quote material. It's good to discuss school policy regarding plagiarism and the penalties for those who are caught plagiarizing.

Research Sources

Before assigning a research paper, a class discussion on the topic of research sources will prove helpful for students. The library and the Internet will no doubt be discussed as possible sources. Encourage students to think beyond these traditional ideas to other, less common information sources. Interviewing elders, consulting public records, and observation are also credible research venues. Make a point to discuss research options that are not as credible, such as second-hand accounts and non-referenced websites.

Professional Writing Careers

English students may be considering professional writing as a career. Other students may not see the importance of excelling in English class. Both types of students benefit from a discussion of professions that rely on excellent writing skills. Newspaper reporters and book authors are just two of many of careers that rely on good writing skills. Technical writers, sports broadcasters and professionals who want to write effective letters all depend on good written communication skills.
