Prepare For Classes Online

Taking a class online presents considerable advantages. The student may be able to register for classes that are not available at brick-and-mortar schools, may attend classes when it is convenient and, in some cases, pay a reduced tuition. Many of the steps students must take when preparing for an online class are similar to those they take when starting a class at a physical location. However, due to the nature of the class, there is more emphasis on technical preparation.

Instructions

1. Set up a workspace for your class. It would be best to choose a room in your home where you will not be interrupted.

2. Purchase and download any software you may need to participate in the class. You may need additional utilities to view certain file types.

3. Find out what books and supplies you need for your class. According to the authors of "Online Education For Dummies," most schools link to virtual bookstores, which create a list of the books and supplies you need for your class. It could take a week or more to receive your order, so consider purchasing what you need ahead of time.

4. Check that your computer meets the technical requirements of the class. Log in to your school's website for information, or contact the technical department to find out whether your computer, operating system and Internet browser will be compatible with the course. You may also need to adjust the resolution of your computer screen.

5. Test your login information. Your school will provide you with a username and password to log in to the class website.

6. Take a virtual tour or read through available tutorials. Most schools provide these tools to show students use the online classroom environment. Use these tools ahead of time, then practice using the site. You may not have access to the class until it actually begins, but you can click on accessible links and find out what modules and pages are available to you.

7. Read the class syllabus ahead of time. This will show you what to expect during the class, such as the topics to be covered and the schedule for assignments, quizzes and exams.

8. Learn contact the people you may need to speak to during the course. These people will include your professor and the technical department in case of any problems with the school's software and your computer.

9. Check your virus protection. This basic step is required for your protection and that of others in your online class. An up-to-date antivirus program ensures that you will not miss classes due to a virus attack.
