Free Scholarships For Minority Students In Prelaw

Scholarships are available to help minority students study pre-law.

Students who are currently pursuing a degree in pre-law or considering a pre-law major in college can apply for a variety of scholarships to help increase the minority presence in law-related fields and cover the cost of education and testing related to pre-law.

African-American Scholarships

In order to increase the presence of lawyers representing and advocating for the African-American community, organizations offer scholarships to African-American pre-law students. The National Black Law Students Association offers two $1,000 scholarships as part of the Nelson Mandela Scholarship Fund designed to help current pre-law students pay a portion of the cost of law school. Students must submit a 1,500-word essay explaining how they plan to use a law degree to help the black community. Another scholarship, the Terrence Mac Maury Scholarship Fund, offers $1,300 to cover the cost of an LSAT preparation course for African-American pre-law students.

Hispanic Scholarships

Hispanic students pursuing degrees in pre-law can apply for a scholarship through the Hispanic National Bar Foundation. The Duard Bradshaw Memorial Scholarship pays for a Princeton Review LSAT preparation course. The Hispanich Scholarship Fund also offers a $2,500 scholarship sponsored by Wal-Mart for students seeking a degree in law or other designated college majors.

Asian Scholarships

The National Asian and Pacific American Bar Association offers multiple scholarships to students pursuing degrees in pre-law. A $7,500 Anheuser-Busch/NLF Presidential Scholarship is awarded annually to two students who demonstrate the ability to serve the Asian and Pacific-American community. Two $2,500 are also awarded to Asian students who are the first in their family to attend law school as part of the UPS/NLF Gold Mountain Scholarships. The association also offers additional $2,000 scholarships to individual applicants.

Other Scholarships

Many pre-law scholarships open to minority students are not specific to one minority group. For example, the Sidley Prelaw Scholars Initiative is open to all minority pre-law students who are in their junior or senior year of college and are considering applying to law school. The scholarship pays for an LSAT preparation program and covers all LSAT fees along with application fees for up to seven law schools. After applying to law school, the scholars also receive an additional $2,500.
