What Is Pharmacy Technology

Pharmacy technology is an important part of the health care system. Also known as pharmacy technicians, pharmacy technologists are responsible for putting the many aspects of pharmacy technology into practice.

Definition

Pharmacy technology is the application of scientific knowledge, techniques and methods to the practice of pharmacy or pharmacology. This work is performed under the supervision of a pharmacist.

Prescriptions

Pharmacy technologists receive prescriptions, pull the corresponding medications and dispense them in the amount and dosages indicated by the prescription.

Compounding

Pharmacy technology involves the compounding of medications such as creams and ointments using compounding machines or manual tools such as a mortar and pestle.

Sterile Technique

A pharmacy technology program teaches technicians prepare sterile products such as intravenous solutions. This may be done manually under the supervision of a pharmacist, or by using machines that automate much of the process.

Inventory

Pharmacy technologists carry out computerized and manual medication inventory practices. They rotate stock, order new medication and manage all aspects of drug inventory.

Verification

Pharmacy technologists verify that prescription information is accurate and complete before filling. They also make sure that errors and contradictions are brought to the attention of the pharmacist or physician.
