Pros & Cons Of Online College Classes

Pros & Cons of Online College Classes

Online college courses are becoming more popular in recent years. The advantages of convenience, flexibility and pace-setting of online courses are attractive to many college students. However, online courses do have disadvantages that the student must overcome. Online college courses are not right for everyone, but many people have found this format to be the best way to achieve their dreams of a college education.

Convenience

You do not have to drive anywhere to attend an online college course. You can log in from your home computer and even "attend" in your pajamas.

Flexibility

Because online college "classrooms" are open 24 hours, you can participate and submit assignments around the clock. You do not have to worry about classes conflicting with other obligations.

Pace

Online college courses generally start each week. You can set your own pace, either completing the program with no breaks or taking frequent breaks between courses.

Isolation

There is no face-to-face contact with online college courses. Some students feel lonely when interacting with a computer screen rather than with "flesh and blood" people.

Online Challenges

Some courses--such as math--are more difficult to learn through an online environment. Also, Internet access, computer problems and server issues can be frustrating when it effects meeting deadlines.

Reputation

While online college programs have worked hard to be seen as respectable alternatives to brick and mortar schools, some employers might not view an online degree as reputable.
