Scholarships For Children Of Military Members

One of the benefits dependents of active duty and retired military members receive is financial assistance to help pay the rising costs of their post-secondary tuition, books and lab fees. Scholarships for children of military members are offered through public and private organizations.

Survivors and Dependents Educational Assistance Program (DEA)

Children of totally or permanently disabled military members are eligible to receive a DEA scholarship. College-age students who are between the ages of 18 and 26 years and who are the sons or daughters of deceased members of the armed forces can also receive the scholarships. Up to 45 months of college or university tuition is covered by the scholarship. Amount and number of scholarships awarded each year varies.

Heroes Legacy Scholarships

Heroes Legacy Scholarships are sponsored by the Fisher House Foundation. Unmarried children younger than 23-years old who are dependents of military members who died or were declared disabled after September 11, 2001 are eligible to receive the scholarships. The number and amount of scholarships distributed each year varies.

Scholarships for Military Children

Scholarships for Military Children were created to honor the contributions made by military families. The awards were also created to recognize the role that military commissaries have played in the lives of members of the armed forces and their dependents. The scholarships are funded by the Defense Commissary Agency. As of March 2011, one $1,500 is awarded at every commissary that receives applications from qualifying military dependents. The total number of scholarships awarded each year varies.

ThankUSA Scholarship

Children of military members who are younger than 24-years old can apply for a ThankUSA Scholarship. They must earn at least a 2.0 grade point average (GPA) in high school or college. Scholarships are awarded in the amount of $3,000. Awards are granted once; they are not renewable. A personal statement that list the applicant's career and educational goals must accompany scholarship applications. Recipients are selected based on financial need, leadership skills, their level of community involvement and how well they have performed academically.
