Top Dental Universities

Dentists protect oral health.

Dentists treat teeth and gums by taking x-rays, filling cavities, repairing broken teeth and performing oral surgery. The American Dental Association's Commission on Dental Accreditation accredits dental colleges and dentists are required to pass a written examination to become licensed to practice. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that dentistry jobs will grow by 16 percent by 2018.

University of Maryland, Baltimore

The University of Maryland Dental School is directly descended from the world's first dental college, the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, founded in 1840. The program offers a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree, as well as undergraduate and graduate dental hygiene degrees. The DDS track requires classroom time and a real-world externship where students work with patients in a dental office. Undergraduate applicants must have completed specific coursework that includes organic chemistry and biology, physics and biochemistry.
