New York Photography & Modeling Colleges

New York has several prestigious photography colleges and some modeling schools.

New York does not have many photography and modeling colleges, but has several different modeling schools. Most colleges in New York have photography classes, but finding a reputable college that has modeling courses is difficult. Most modeling agencies in New York train the models themselves and most of the modeling schools do not provide anything to the student except walking a runway.

Modeling Colleges

New York has one well known modeling college, called Barbizon. This college is located in more than 200 cities and offers acting courses as well as modeling training. Even though a college degree is not achieved upon completion of the schooling, unlike most modeling schools, Barbizon has a reputation for discovering fashion models and super models. The coursework includes runway techniques, cosmetic processes and voice projection. Most modeling schools have prerequisites before being eligible to attend the school. A student seeking to become a fashion model has a certain body type, photographs well and is generally a teenager. No modeling schools in New York grant legitimate degrees.

Photography Colleges

Photography colleges are degree-granting institutions and provide the student with either an associate's or bachelor's degree. Tisch, New York University's photography school, has a four-year bachelor of fine arts (BFA) in photography and the Art Institute provides a two-year associate's degree in photography. A photography college generally builds the course curriculum around two areas, creative practices and critical studies. Critical studies covers the history of photography and film while the creative practices areas concentrate on vision and presentation along with the techniques used in both areas.

Types of Photography

Photography is broken up into many different types. There is adventure and action photography, aerial photography, artistic photography, black and white photography, forensic photography, photojournalism and modeling photography, just to name a few. Attending a New York photography college will enable a graduate to attain an entry level job in any one of these types of photography. Most photographers work for an established organization before venturing out on their own and specializing in a particular type of photography.

Modeling Schools

Most modeling schools, unlike the one mentioned in Section 1, do not provide anything to the students that cannot be found for free somewhere else. The fact that no modeling school has a course curriculum or accreditation from any reputable agency says a lot about the training received at one of these facilities. According to many reports, most of the instructors at the modeling schools are not and never have been models themselves. Modeling schools are generally not worth the time and money spent to attend and all a person seeking to become a model needs to do is visit a local modeling agency. The modeling agency will be honest about a person's prospects as a model as well as train the individuals who have a chance at becoming a model. The modeling industry tends to find its models itself and has little use for modeling schools.
