Many scholarships available to black male students are based on career choices.
Young black males in Michigan can apply for scholarships to help cover the costs of attending a college or university. Scholarships are available during various times of the year. Many of the scholarships are offered by private organizations. The scholarships afford students a chance to attend college when it may be financially difficult to do so.
UNCF General Scholarship
Black males in Michigan who are planning to attend a historically black college or university can apply for a scholarship from the United Negro College Fund (UNCF). The general scholarship offered by the UNCF provides up to $5,000 to young black males who are pursuing any field of study. The application is part of the nomination process, which also includes a review of a student's academic record and financial need.
National Association of Black Journalists Scholarship
The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) offers scholarships of up to $2,500 for young black males in Michigan who are pursuing a career in journalism. Interested applicants must be student members of NABJ and must be enrolled in a college or university. Applicants are required to submit a resume, 500-800 word essay and samples of their work. Samples can include videos, print stories and slide shows. Applicants also need to provide three references with their application.
Thurgood Marshall College Fund
The Thurgood Marshall College Fund offers a merit-based scholarship on a yearly basis. Students must also be able to show a financial need for the scholarship. The award can be used to cover the cost of tuition, room and board, or books. The award is paid directly to the school the student is attending. The fund provides numerous scholarships for qualified black males from various states, including Michigan. Scholarships are open during varying periods during the year.
AIChE Minority Scholarship Awards
The American Institute of Chemical Engineers offers a scholarship each year to black males in Michigan and other states who are pursuing a career in chemical engineering. The scholarship is available for incoming freshmen at four-year universities that offer a science/engineering degree. During the selection process, a student's academic record and financial need will be evaluated. Recipients of the scholarship will receive a one-time award of $1,000. The award can be used toward tuition, books or other related expenses.
