California State University at Chico -- Chico State -- opened its doors in 1889. Offering more than 100 undergraduate degree programs, the campus is centered on more than 100 acres in downtown Chico, a city with a metropolitan population of more than 100,000 situated about 90 miles north of Sacramento. Fifty-two percent of Chico State's students are female, and 48 percent are male.
Purpose
Fraternities and sororities at Chico State are active in both university and community life. Membership in a fraternity or sorority, notes the Chico Greeks website, provides an enhanced experience of the undergraduate life, forges friendships that endure beyond college and fosters increased academic excellence through group dynamics, study partnerships and incentives for academic achievement, including membership in the Order of Omega Greek Honor Society.
Greek Houses
Ten fraternities and nine sororities make up the Greek community at Chico State. Fraternities are governed by the Interfraternity Council, or IFC. The university recognizes two governing organizations for sororities: the Panhellenic Council and the Multicultural Greek Council, or MGC. Gamma Zeta Alpha fraternity is unique in being affiliated with both the IFC and MGC. Most of the fraternity and sorority houses are located in an area bounded by W. Second St. on the north and W. Eighth St. on the south, between Ivy and Salem streets.
Panhellenic Council
The sororities affiliated with the Panhellenic Council are Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Gamma Delta, Alpha Phi, Gamma Phi Beta and Sigma Kappa. Recruitment for the sororities takes place during Spring Formal Recruitment. To participate, the prospective applicant must be at least a second-semester freshman, enrolled for a minimum of 12 units at Chico State and maintaining a grade point average of 2.5 or higher. Eight board members of the Panhellenic Council meet weekly to discuss issues involving the Greek community, to plan activities and to undertake other business.
Multicultural Greek Council
The National Multicultural Greek Council, or NMGC, was established in 1988 and aims to promote the awareness of multicultural diversity in and outside the academic community. NMGC-member organizations or chapters exist in 21 states. Affiliated with the NMGC at Chico State are four sororities -- Delta Xi Phi, Lambda Theta Nu, Lambda Sigma Gamma and Upsilon Kappa Delta.
